Depart from Semera in the morning and travel through the dramatic desert landscapes of the Afar Region toward Lake Afdera, one of the deepest salt lakes in the Danakil Depression. Stop at the lake for lunch and observe the daily life of the Afar communities living near the shoreline. Continue to Hamed Ela, a remote settlement that serves as a base for exploration in the Danakil region. In the morning travel to the Gheralta region near Hawzen, famous for its dramatic sandstone cliffs and ancient rock-hewn churches. Begin a guided hike and climb to reach one of the spectacular cliff-top churches. The climb includes sections of hand-and-foot scrambling assisted by local guides and ropes. At the summit explore churches decorated with remarkable frescoes dating back many centuries and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views across the surrounding highlands.
